Meet Jennifer. Jennifer grew up in a neighborhood riddled with crime and violence. As a result, she was never allowed to leave the house, in fear of her own safety. Fortunately for her, her parents found Girls Inc. Girls Inc. was a safe refuge for Jennifer that has supported her through the toughest moments of her life. Through the services offered by the program, she was able to have new experiences she never would have tried otherwise and was able to conquer her fear of public speaking, even becoming the Vice President of her school. In addition, Girls Inc. helped Jennifer obtain a scholarship to an all-girls private high school and another to get to travel to Europe and learn about the Holocaust. Yet, Jennifer’s family still endured struggles. Soon before her trip, her family was evicted from their home and left homeless. They had to stay separated and live in the homes of other friends. Once her mother was able to find another home to rent, Jennifer saved every dollar of unused scholarship money she had to help her family. Through Girls Inc. Jennifer was able to obtain internships to not only help her gain work experience, but also help contribute to her family’s expenses. One summer, Jennifer found her passion in working with mental illnesses through a community service agency she worked with. She plans to continue studying this in college, which she can now attend, being the first in her family to do so, thanks to a $20,000 scholarship that Girls Inc. helped her obtain. Girls Inc. helped Jennifer realize that she does have the power to take her life into her own hands and create positive change in the world. Jennifer, like so many others, now knows that she can do anything she puts her mind to.

Pooja, the founder of Purposeful Artistry, is a high schooler from California who has been doing art her whole life. After realizing the power that artwork has to do good in the world, she came up with the idea of selling artwork to help fundraise for non-profits, while also supporting emerging artists by making their work more accessible to customers. Thus, Purposeful Artistry was formed. From a young age, Pooja has always had a fascination with the different colors and shades surrounding her and felt compelled to recreate the beauty she witnessed into art. She has always enjoyed experimenting with different mediums of art, as well as different tones and shades as she believes each aspect of a picture adds a new layer of meaning to her work. Her belief in finding meaning through every detail in a piece of artwork led her to seek a way to make artwork more understandable and meaningful to people. In addition, Pooja has always devoted herself to giving back to her community, focusing on helping a diverse array of important social causes. “I believe that storytelling is one of the most effective ways to bring about change and impact in the community,” she says, “I see art as an extremely powerful storytelling tool that often goes underappreciated in society.” By putting her skills and passion to use, Pooja has created Purposeful Artistry to help spread her strong belief in the power of art and helping.
